Video Review
The Elroq marks the beginning of Skoda’s next chapter in electrification. After introducing the Enyaq three years ago, the Czech brand is gearing up to launch two new electric models within a year. The Elroq will hit Irish roads early next year, followed by the more compact and budget-friendly Epiq baby SUV, which is set to debut towards the end of 2025. Exciting times lie ahead for Skoda’s EV lineup.
With the Elroq, Skoda is targeting the highly competitive mid-size SUV segment, one of the most popular sectors in the car market. Going head-to-head with rivals like the Kia EV3, Hyundai Kona, and Volvo EX30, it comes packed with potential, but will it be enough to win over buyers in this busy segment?
Performance
The Elroq is built using the familiar hardware found in many VW Group electric vehicles, but it offers some exciting new options. At launch, buyers can select power outputs ranging from 168bhp to 282bhp, all featuring rear-wheel drive. An all-wheel-drive 85x variant, with a combined output of 300bhp, is expected to join the lineup later next year.
Opting for the 82kWh version delivers a top speed of 180km/h, a 0-100km/h sprint in just 6.6 seconds, and a maximum torque of 545Nm. Meanwhile, the smaller 55kWh option offers a top speed of 160km/h, a 0-100km/h time of 9 seconds, and 310Nm of torque.
On the road, the Elroq impresses with its smooth and refined drive. It handles speed bumps effortlessly, with minimal cabin noise and a comfortable ride. The steering feels well-weighted, and the car is packed with advanced road safety assistance features, ensuring a secure and enjoyable driving experience.
Range and Charging
The Elroq lineup offers four battery options to cater to different needs. The entry-level Elroq 50 features a 52kWh battery, while the Elroq 60 comes with a 59kWh pack. For those seeking more range, the Elroq 85 and Elroq 85x models are equipped with a larger 77kWh battery. The Elroq 85 delivers an impressive range of up to 576 km, while the 50 offers a respectable 373 km of official range.
Fast charging is a highlight of the Elroq 85, supporting DC charging at speeds of up to 175kW. All models in the range can charge from 10% to 80% in under 28 minutes, keeping downtime to a minimum. To further enhance charging efficiency, the Elroq features a manual battery pre-conditioning system that warms the battery in colder weather, ensuring optimal DC charging speeds. Unlike many other EVs, this feature doesn’t require inputting the charging station into the car’s navigation system—you can simply activate it with a button, allowing you the freedom to use your preferred navigation app instead.
Design and Interior
The Elroq introduces Skoda’s fresh design language, "Modern Solid," marking a significant shift from its previous styling. At the front, the traditional grille is replaced by a sleek “Tech-Deck Face” with a minimalist aesthetic, complemented by Skoda lettering instead of the usual badge.
The rear design takes cues from the Enyaq, offering a familiar look with refined details. Aerodynamically optimised wheels and a clever wheel gap reducer enhance airflow, contributing to efficiency. Buyers can choose from wheel sizes ranging between 19 and 21 inches.
Inside, the Elroq adopts the best of Volkswagen Group technology while streamlining usability. It features a clear digital cockpit similar to the Enyaq, an optional head-up display with augmented reality, and a 13-inch central touchscreen for seamless control.
Practicality is a strong point for the Elroq, offering up to 1,580 litres of cargo space when the seats are folded, far surpassing competitors like the Ford Explorer’s 445 litres, though falling short of the Kia EV3’s 485 litres with seats in place. The Elroq also includes thoughtful storage solutions, such as a net for charging cables, side shelves, underfloor compartments, foldable dividers to organise the boot, and dedicated slots for items like an umbrella and ice scraper.
Cost Considerations
Elroq pricing starts at €36,545 for the entry-level Elroq 50, which comes equipped with a 52kWh battery, a 170hp electric motor, and a range of 375km. Standard features include a 13-inch touchscreen, dual-zone climate control, heated front seats and steering wheel, built-in navigation, wireless phone charging, adaptive cruise control, a reversing camera, and all-round parking sensors.
The mid-range Elroq 60, arriving later in 2025, features a 59kWh battery, a 204hp motor, and a significantly improved range of 440km. Priced from €38,415, it’s expected to be the most popular choice in the lineup.
The range-topping Elroq 85 starts at €42,315, offering a 285hp motor and an impressive range of up to 580km. A Sportline 85x variant, featuring dual motors and all-wheel drive, is planned for release further down the line.
Conclusion
The Skoda Elroq enters a fiercely competitive market but stands out with its appealing price point and a host of compelling features. Offering a smooth, comfortable driving experience paired with a stylish and well-designed interior, the Elroq strikes an excellent balance between practicality and affordability. Its family-friendly appeal makes it a strong contender for those looking to make the switch to electric.
